From the blogg:
"I also asked the Leader and Deputy
Leader of the Council to add their support to the campaign
with a letter, as well as emailing all the councillors to
ask them to sign the petition.
I know a number of council colleagues have signed the
petition and yesterday received this message from the
Leader's office:
"The Leader has asked me to inform you that he
supports your action on this. Cllr Meehan will be drafting
a letter to the new owners reminding them of the
historical importance of retaining the Kinks memorabilia
in its current form."
So there is plenty of support for the campaign."

Dear
Kai Arne Armann
Thank
you for your email.
Further
to investigations, there is currently no planning
application for this the Clissold Arms, however, you
should know that the Clissold Arms is a locally listed
building within the Fortis Green Conservation Area, and
the building is not statutorily listed. It is
unlikely to become so, as it is not of sufficient
architectural merit to warrant statutory listing. In the
circumstances, the Council does not, unfortunately, have
any control over works carried out to the interior of
the Public House, and, therefore, would not be able to
use any planning powers to resist a refit.
Yours
sincerely
Cllr
George Meehan

Bill
Harrow has contacted member of Haringey Council for
Fortis Green Matt Davies on E-mail.
We got the permison from Bill and Matt to publish his
responce here:. |
Responce
1:
Thanks very much for the e-mail.
I had just seen news that the Kinks memorabilia might be
abandoned and share your concern about that.
Unfortunately there is very little that the Council can
do on this - if the new owners decide to make material
changes to the outside of the building they will have to
apply for planning permission of course, but the decor
inside is totally in their control.
What I will do though, is write a letter to the pub
urging them to maintain the Kinks link and history.
Personally, I think even from a business point of view
they would be foolish not to take advantage of it.
I will let you know when they respond - it may be that
they fully intend to keep the Kinks link and there has
been misunderstanding/unnecessary concern over it.
Thanks for getting in touch, best wishes
Matt
p.s. I'm no relation to Ray as it happens! |
Responce
2:
No problems. (Bills publishing on the Ray Davies forum)
I have sent a letter to the Clissold Arms today asking
them to preserve the Kinks heritage and am also going to
ask the Leader of the Council to make representations.
We are, of course, only reliant on the owners' goodwill,
but hopefully some requests might help encourage them!
You may want to write to the pub yourself too.
Best wishes

To
Whom It May Concern:
I visit
England just about every other year. I always make it a
point to stop by the Clissold and sit near the Kinks display.
It is a great tribute to the band that Rolling Stone
magazine ranked #5 on its list of Top Ten Rock Bands of the
Century (Dec. 16-23, 1999). It would be very sad if the
Clissold does not recognize that the Davies brothers
played their first gig there.
I have edited
two collections of essays on the Kinks (Living on a Thin
Line and a special issue of Popular Music and Society)
and I am completing a critical study of the work of Ray Davies,
to be published this fall by Routledge.
I ask that the
current owners of the Clissold make every effort to
preserve the Kinks tribute. It is very meaningful to
Kinks' fans around the world
Sincerely,
Tom Kitts

I am very upset
that the new licensee wants to disregard the Kinks heritage at
The Clissold Arms. I think that the artefacts might
still in fact belong to Konk, and that they should be returned
there if they are not wanted.
The Queen Alexandra pub opposite was the pub
that Ray and Dave used, as their Dad, Fred, used the Clissold.
They have album covers and musicians' photos on the wall, so the
landlord there might be interested in taking the
memorabilia.
Mike Kraus, the American fan who set The Kinks
wall up in the Clissold Arms, passed away a few years ago, and I
think it is important that his heritage is not destroyed.
If the items are auctioned, who will get the
money? The new landlady?
I organise Kinks fans get togethers, the night
before the Kinks fanclub gig, and when we were at the Clissold
Arms, the Manager, John Dick, was delighted to have us there
playing and singing Kinks songs (a free gig!). When the
CAMRA event was planned, he asked me to get some Kinks fans
together to make some music.
We now have to try and find local pubs to have
a gathering in, ones which don't have the heritage, and don't
quite understand what we're about.!
I also run an Unofficial Kinks Tour, and take
fans around the Kinks London haunts, which always involved
a meal at The Clissold Arms. We certainly won't feel
welcome in future.
It is a shame that certain people think that
The Kinks and good eating don't go together! I also suppose that
the back of the pub will be modernised now. I loved the
old fashioned cosiness it had. Such is progress :-(

The Kinks connection with the Clissold Arms must be maintained
and the memorabilia collection kept intact at the pub. So many
pubs in the UK are faceless and characterless these days, simply
seen as a means of cramming as many teenagers as possible into
as small a space as possible and sell them as much booze as
possible before they fall down in the street.
The
character of pubs like the Clissold Arms should be preserved,
and any establishment lucky enough to have a link with one of
the world’s greatest and most influential rock bands should
preserve and celebrate that link. Intelligent people will always
seek out such establishments for their historical significance.

For a country that is so seemingly steeped in the
preservation of its wonderful history, I find it shocking that
the new owners of the Clissold Arms would simply dismiss the
Kinks little corner of history from the Clissold Arms. I
have made the pilgimage to Muswell Hill and the bar twice now as
have hundreds of others I am sure. Not only do I request
that the new owners maintain the current memorabilia,
I challenge them to enlarge it! I'm sure Kinks fans all
over the world would love to contribute their cherished
possessins to be displayed on the hallowed walls. Perhaps
the new owners should listen to and keep replaying a delightful
little ditty called "Village Green Preservation Society".

So
sad!
I was planning to go to London and visit Clissold Arms this
summer. To think that the new owners will destroy the pub and
sell all Kinks memorabilia is almost criminal. It´s a
historical place in the music history. I really hope that they
will change their minds, if not, why do they not sell the pub to
someone else that is willing to preserve the historical place.
Surely there must me other places where the new owners can open
the restaurant that they want.

I came all the way from San Francisco to make my pilgrimmage to
this historic pub in October 2005...took an hour or more from my
hotel in central London just to set foot in the place where the
Davies brothers, obviously the most underappreciated rock singer/songwriters
in history, started their early performance. There is
plenty of room in that pub to cordon off a small part of Kinks
history, or the new owners are complete idiots!

One of the highlights of my trip to London was getting a peek at
the front room of the Davies' house where Ray and Dave used to
play music and then stopping across the street for a bite and a
drink at an authentic English Pub. I knew the Kink's history of
the place and the memorabilia was a special treat. The next time
I am in town I promise I will not stop in at a gastropub
stripped of any reference to the historical significance of the
Davies' brothers first public gig

Dear
Madam/Sir,
I
deeply want to express my sad feelings, ever since I heard the `Clissold
Arms pub` will be giving a total new destination, without the
preservation of the prove what has happened there, the
significant importance of the startingpoint of the Kinks. Which
eventually led to a CBE award for the leader, singer and writer
Ray Davies in 2004. One of the highest awards of The British
Empire.
The
Clissold Arms is so important to so many people all over the
world, who know about the place and visit it on a regular basis.
This has got to do with culture of the purest form.
I
sincerely hope there is a chance the new owners will honor and
respect the past and give the pub the possibility to endure that
extra atmosphere that’s been there for more over 4 decades.
No
need to say I´m a regular visitor also, even though I live in
Holland
Please,
reconsider and use this small, but oh so important place in the
`Kinkdom` with respect for the days of old. Give it a corner or
a wall. That´s all it needs.
Btw,
it will bring you profit and prosperity.
Thank
you.
